Edison Bungalow Haputale, more widely known as Adisham Bungalow, is one of Sri Lanka’s most elegant colonial-era mansions. Located in the misty hills near Haputale, this remarkable estate is surrounded by lush forests, tea plantations, and breathtaking mountain scenery. The peaceful setting and cool climate make it one of the most unique heritage attractions in Sri Lanka.
The bungalow was built in 1931 by Sir Thomas Lister Villiers, a prominent British planter and former Governor of Ceylon. Designed in the Tudor-Jacobean architectural style, the mansion features stone walls, Burma teak interiors, grand staircases, and beautifully maintained gardens. Today, the property serves as St. Benedict’s Monastery and is commonly referred to as Adisham Monastery.
Situated approximately 6 to 7 kilometers from Haputale town, the bungalow can be reached by a scenic drive through tea estates and mountain roads. The journey itself is part of the experience, offering stunning views of valleys, forests, and the surrounding hill country landscape.
