Famous colonial-era railway bridge in Ella surrounded by lush greenery and tea plantations, known for scenic train views.
About Nine Arch Bridge
Nine Arch Bridge, also known as the Bridge in the Sky, is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic colonial-era railway bridges. Located in the scenic town of Ella, it was built during the British colonial period using stone, brick, and cement without any steel reinforcement due to material shortages during World War I.
The bridge spans approximately 91 meters and stands tall amidst lush green tea plantations and dense jungle. It is part of the Badulla–Colombo railway line and is located between Ella and Demodara railway stations. The surrounding landscape makes it one of the most picturesque railway locations in the world.
One of the biggest attractions is watching the train slowly pass over the bridge while surrounded by misty hills and greenery. The timing of the trains is often the highlight for visitors, making it a perfect spot for photography, videography, and drone shots.
Visitors can reach the bridge by walking through scenic jungle trails or tea plantations from Ella town. The hike itself is a memorable experience, offering beautiful viewpoints along the way.
Today, Nine Arch Bridge is one of the most visited attractions in Ella and a must-see destination for travelers exploring Sri Lanka’s hill country.
