About Dambulla Cave Temple
Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is one of Sri Lanka’s most important historical and religious landmarks. Located in the Central Province, the temple complex is built inside a massive rock that rises above the surrounding plains.
The site dates back more than 2,000 years and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its outstanding historical and cultural value. It is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka.
The temple consists of five main caves filled with ancient Buddha statues, colorful murals, and sacred religious artwork. More than 150 Buddha statues can be found throughout the caves, along with statues of kings and deities.
The cave ceilings and walls are covered with intricate paintings that depict scenes from the life of Lord Buddha and important events in Buddhist history. These artworks are considered some of the finest examples of Buddhist art in Sri Lanka.
Visitors must climb a series of stone steps to reach the temple entrance. Along the way, travelers can enjoy beautiful views of Dambulla town and the surrounding countryside.
